Its job is to spread out the weight of vehicles evenly across the ground below, resist shifting, and let water drain instead of pooling under the surface and undermining it.
Without a properly compacted base, even a perfectly mixed asphalt layer will crack, rut, and settle unevenly within a year or two, since it has nothing stable underneath it to hold its shape under repeated weight.
What Road Base Is Actually Made Of
Most road base is what's called crusher run or dense graded aggregate, a mix of crushed stone in a range of particle sizes, from roughly an inch down to fine dust. That range of sizes is intentional. The larger pieces create structural strength, and the smaller particles fill the gaps between them, locking everything into a dense, stable mass once compacted. How Deep Should Road Base Be?
Depth depends on what the surface above it needs to support and what the native soil underneath is like.
- Walkways and light foot traffic: 2 to 3 inches
- Standard residential driveways: 4 to 6 inches
- Driveways over poor native soil or heavier vehicles: 6 to 8 inches
