How to Calculate Crusher Run

Quick answer: measure the area, multiply by the finished compacted depth, convert that volume to cubic yards, increase it to a planning loose order volume, and multiply by the supplier's loose bulk density. The calculator above follows that sequence instead of treating loose delivered material and finished compacted volume as the same thing.

Crusher run is also sold under regional names such as crush and run, dense graded aggregate, ABC, #21A, #411, quarry process, and road base. Those names are not guaranteed to describe an identical gradation in every market. If the supplier gives you a product density or local specification, use that information instead of relying on a generic conversion.

Crusher Run Formula: Finished Volume to Order Tons

The default workflow uses four separate quantities so the result is easy to audit:

  1. Finished volume: area × finished depth.
  2. Planning loose volume: finished volume × (1 + loose-volume allowance).
  3. Order volume: planning loose volume × (1 + optional extra material).
  4. Order tons: order cubic yards × loose bulk density.

For a rectangular project measured in feet and inches, the shortcut is:

Finished cubic yards = Length × Width × Depth in inches ÷ 324

Then apply the allowance and supplier density. The calculator defaults to 1.42 short tons per loose cubic yard, which is about 105 pounds per cubic foot, plus a 15 percent loose-volume allowance. Those are planning inputs, not universal material properties. You can change both fields before calculating.

Worked Example: Crusher Run for a Driveway Base

Suppose a driveway section is 50 feet long, 12 feet wide, and the finished crusher run layer needs to be 4 inches deep. At the calculator defaults, the finished volume is 7.41 cubic yards. A 15 percent loose-volume allowance brings the planning loose volume to 8.52 cubic yards. Adding a 5 percent site margin gives 8.94 cubic yards to order.

Crusher run prices vary by quarry, stone source, region, order size, and delivery distance. Rather than publishing a national price that may not match your market, this calculator lets you enter the supplier's price per ton and delivery fee per load. The cost result uses the rounded order quantity, because that is closer to what you will actually ask the supplier to deliver.

Choosing the Right Depth for a Crusher Run Driveway

A calculator can size material once you know the required finished depth, but it should not choose the structural design for you. Why Density Matters More Than a Fixed Tons-per-Yard Rule

Bulk aggregate is not a solid block of rock. The measured weight of a cubic yard changes with gradation, moisture, particle shape, and how tightly the material is packed. Common Crusher Run Estimating Mistakes

  • Using loose depth as finished depth: the depth field on this page is the target compacted layer, not the height of a fresh loose pile.
  • Applying compaction twice: the loose-volume allowance already increases the finished target volume. Do not add a second compaction factor somewhere else unless your supplier or project method specifically requires it.
  • Assuming every crusher run product weighs the same: replace the default density when you have a supplier value.
